French
Roulette appears at first glance to be the exact same as
European roulette. The roulette wheel is the same and the roulette
table is the same, but there is a slight difference in a few of the
possible bets and how they are handled. The good news is that on these bets, the house edge is reduced even further than the already favorable (at least favorable in comparison to American roulette) odds of European roulette. French Roulette En Prison RuleIn French roulette, any bet made by a player for even money, which includes odd, even, red, black, 1 - 18 and 19 -36, and results in a spin of zero, the players bet is not collected by the house. It is put "en prison" and on the next spin if the player would have won the bet it is returned to the player with no winnings. This reduces the house edge to around 1.35% on all even money bets. In another variation of French roulette, instead of putting the bet "en prison", half the bet is returned immediately. The only places I am aware of online that offer French roulette are the Microgaming casinos. The two I recommend are River Belle and Blackjack Ballroom. Make sure to check to see if they still offer French roulette, as software versions do change from time to time. French Roulette vs European RouletteThere is often some confusion when players refer to European roulette and French roulette. Most American players call any roulette game using a single zero European roulette, while in many other parts of the world when a player calls a game European roulette, they are actually referring to what Americans call French roulette. The only reason I even mention this is because most online casinos are designed with American players in mind when naming their games, so if you are used to calling roulette with a prison or similar rule European roulette, you will probably be surprised when playing online, as the online versions of European roulette usually do not offer this more favorable variation. |
